Staff at Garda College start industrial action

Cleaning staff at the Mid Tipp training centre started a work to rule this morning in a row over pay and several other issues.

Planned action by members of the IMPACT trade union was suspended in September in order to facility talks at the Workplace Relations Commission.

However the union says there was a lack of engagement on the part of management with no senior member present at the discussions and the only proposal put forward was a staff review – despite the fact that such an independent review had already taken place.

The row centres on several issues including the colleges failing to hire enough staff to deal with the increased garda student numbers at Templemore, health and safety concerns while the workers are the lowest paid civil servants in Ireland.

Impact served notice of today's industrial action to An Garda Síochana last week and say the work to rule means staff will revert solely to cleaning duties instead of working as housekeepers or hotel services staff.
