Seanad Abolition Referendum Defeated

51.7% of those who cast their vote voted in favour of keeping the Seanad and 48.3% voted in favour of abolishing it.

In terms of actual votes that works out as 591,937 votes in favour and 634,437 votes against.

Speaking after the result was announced, Senator Katherine Zappone said that it's important now that senators meet Taoiseach Enda Kenny and come up with a strong way of ensuring that the upper house is reformed.

Meanwhile the final count hasn't yet been reached in the referendum to establish a new Court of Appeal.

However, with the results in from 32 constitiuencies it looks as if the motion will be overwhelmingly passed by a majority of around 66% to 34%.
