Calls have been made for the resignation of the Health and Safety officer with Transport Infrastructure Ireland over the state of Suir Bridge in Thurles.

Independent Councillor Jim Ryan has asked that the individual step down – in response to the TII’s failing to take action on the major disrepair of the bridge.

A Tipperary County Council representative admitted that the bridge – which is a central feature of the town – is a serious health and safety risk.

The authority says that the TII is being contacted ‘every second day’ about the issue and they’ve expressed their frustration with the roads agency.

Councillor Ryan says questions have to be answered.
