Revamp on the way for Clonmel’s cinema

Plans to expand the site on Kickham Street into a new three storey building catering for extra screens have been approved.

The planning application to Tipperary County Council from Cinema Properties Limited sought to demolish number 27 Gladstone Street in Clonmel – the former Slattery's site.

Permission was also sought to partially knock the current entrance to the existing cinema complex on Kickham Street whilst retaining the remains of the north east mural tower which is part of the old town wall of Clonmel and a national monument.

The plan also included converting the ground floor of 28 Gladstone Street into the new entrance foyer for the cinema and to increase the multiplex from 5 to 8 screens.

The site is located within the O'Connell Street and Gladstone Street Architectural Conservation Area.

In granting planning permission Tipperary County Council ordered that an archaeological assessment of the development site be carried out prior to work commencing.
