There are plans to expand a mushroom farm in West Tipp.

Walsh Mushrooms in Golden have lodged a planning application with the local authority in recent days.
The Walsh Mushrooms Group is one of the largest suppliers of fresh mushrooms in Ireland and the UK.

The Wexford based company acquired Golden Mushrooms in West Tipp in 2016 from where they produce 60,000 kilos of fresh mushrooms each week.

They now hope to expand this with plans for 12 new mushroom tunnels at the Cloghleigh site.

The application also includes the provision of a new cold store and packaging area as well as 40 car parking spaces.

The move, which comes amid on-going volatility in the sector in the wake of Brexit, can be seen as a significant show of confidence in the future of the Irish mushroom industry.

It follows the closure last year of Schiele and McDonald Mushrooms in Tipp Town and Golden Vale Mushrooms in Cahir.

A decision is due from Tipperary County Council on the plans for Walsh Mushrooms by January 10th next.
