Party leaders scrap in first TV debate

The debate last night on TV3 and Newstalk saw them clash on the economy, health, crime, abortion and housing as well as who they wouldn't go into coalition with.

After a relatively relaxing start on the issue of the economy and tax cuts, it got feisty.

Tánaiste and Labour leader Joan Burton rounded on Sinn Féin.

On health the Taoiseach was forced to say he had regrets, and clashed with Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin.

Gerry Adams came under fire from the other three on the issue of crime and security.

Apart from the Taoiseach and Tánaiste standing united, no-one else was about coalitions.

Realistically we learned nothing new last night, especially when they shouted over each other – the next big debate will have seven voices and not just four.
