One third of women killed by relative or partner

A third of women killed in Ireland are attacked by a male relative or acquaintance.

A new report by Women's Aid has found that an average of 10 women have died violently every year since 1996 – but that the figure has declined for the past two years.

The charity is hoping that the data collected will help to prevent further deaths…by showing how dangerous domestic violence can be and how it can escalate.

Director Margaret Martin wants to combine their findings with information from other sources and build an understanding of why women don't leave abusive relationships.
