No date for pardon for Harry Gleeson

Frances Fitzgerald announced earlier this month that a posthumous pardon was being granted to the Holycross native…the first time in the history of the state.

Farm labourer Harry Gleeson was wrongly convicted and hanged for the death of Moll McCarthy near New Inn over 70 years ago.

It's now up to President Michael D Higgins to officially exercise his right of pardon.

Speaking at the Garda College in Templemore yesterday Minister Fitzgerald said there is no definite date for the pardon.

Minister Fitzgerald also said she understands the desire of Harry Gleeson's family to have his remains buried in County Tipperary.

He's currently buried in an unmarked grave at Mountjoy in Dublin – his family want to have him re-interred in Holycross

Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald says they are doing their best to make this happen.
