He was one of two councillors nominated for the role with Fianna Fail’s Siobhan Ambrose also put forward as a candidate.
However Cllr Pat English – who was backed by Cllr Andy Moloney and seconded by Richie Molloy won out in the end by 5 votes to 4 under the d’Hondt system.
