Mount Carmel Hospital in South Dublin is to close.

The High Court has appointed provisional liquidators who propose to gradually wind up the private hospital in order to protect its 230 patients who will continue to be cared for at the facility.

But as of today no more elective procedures will be carried out and obstetric patients will be transferred to other maternity hospitals.

The High Court has agreed to appoint provisional liquidators to the hospital which in recent years has been dependent on the financial support of NAMA. It is now completely insolvent with debts of over 39 million euro.

The hospital’s 328 full and part time staff will also be affected.
