Minister meets business groups in London before EU referendum

Minister Flanagan is also meeting with UK Foreign Secretary Phillip Hammond today.

Minister Flanagan has today met with Irish and UK business groups many of whose members are entitled to vote in June’s referendum; urging them to speak to their members and wider community about being fully engaged in the debate about EU membership.

According to the British Irish Council, there are around 1.5 million people voting both in Ireland and the UK who have Irish links and may be considering the impact on Irish and UK relations when they go to the polls.

The Irish government is concerned about the impact of the 62 billion euro trade partnership between Ireland and the UK that may be hampered if the UK leaves.

Director General of the British Irish Chamber of Commerce John McGrane says while Irish institutions like the IFSC may see some marginal gains in the event of a Brexit, this will be dramatically outweighed by the wider cost to the economy and political landscape.
