Lack of funding to impact on Tipperary road repairs.

Council officials say regional and local roads across Tipperary will have to be prioritised for improvements for the coming year.

The County Council's funding allocation for 2015 of €16.3 million is down significantly on last year's grant and will not be enough to fix all the roads around the Premier County.

Previous year's funding for the now-abolished town and borough councils has been lost with the amalgamation of North and South Tipperary.

The bulk of the funding – €8.6 million will be used for restoration improvements, while the council's discretionary grant is just over €4 million.

Several specific projects have been granted individual allocations including Lismolin Bridge with €418,000 and the upgrade for the Latteragh road which gets €150,000.

Marcus O'Connor says the funding for Latteragh will be used to get started on plans for an alternative route and environmental impact studies.

In previous years, each town and borough council had a separate allocation which added up to a significant amount, however, this has been lost now meaning the allocation is down around €1.5 million.

Carrick area Fianna Fail councillor Imelda Goldsboro says the allocation is an attack on rural Ireland and is affecting tourism and business.

Council officials have already requesting a meeting with the Transport Minister Pascal Donoghue to state their case for emergency funding and say they will continue to fight for more money throughout the year.

Cathaoirleach Michael Fitzgerald wants the allocation of money for National routes to be redistributed to local roads for a short period of time.

Council officials will distribute the money to the five municipal districts over the coming weeks to allocate to specific projects.
