Justice Minister rejects inaction over taped garda calls

Alan Shatter says it's of concern that the practice was in place – and for so long.

But the Opposition says it's simply not credible that the Minister continues to refuse to accept responsibility – and one TD told him to “walk the plank”.

Alan Shatter told the Dáil that he understands people are demanding answers but he says he's constrained by a court case, and can't reveal any more for now.

The Justice Minister was also adamant he didn't get any warnings about these tapes, and first he knew was this week.

But the Opposition are accusing him of inaction and incompetence and presiding over a dysfunctional system Fianna Fáil's Niall Collins asked if there was anyone the Minister hasn't fought with and said the Minister's position wasn't believable and Sinn Fein’s Padraig McLochlainn told the Minister to go.

Alan Shatter will be back in the Dáil to answer on the penalty points issue and his claim the whistleblowers hadn't co-operated later today.
