33 year old David Byrne was killed and two others were seriously injured when gunmen wearing Garda style uniforms and brandishing AK47 assault rifles stormed a boxing weigh in at the hotel.
In a statement to the BBC, the Continuity IRA said Mr Byrne was targeted because he had been involved in the killing of Alan Ryan in Dublin four years ago.
Ryan was a leading member of another dissident republican group, the Real IRA.
