GSOC unaware of widespread practice of recorded calls

The report – which was published on the 16th June 2013 – made a recommendation that the Garda Commissioner “re-evaluate” the Garda policy of recording telephone calls at the station in question.

A copy of the report was not sent to the Department of Justice but published in full on the GSOC website.

Commissioner Ciaran Fitzgerald says the focus of the investigation was Waterford Garda Station only.

“We stuck fairly rigidly to the case at hand and to the evidence we had and we highlighted the fact that we had had some concerns – we weren't, as somebody said this morning, putting big red flags on it but we were suggesting that they might want to re-evaluate the practice in light of what we had discovered in court through the recording and then the inadmissibility” he said.

“But we didn't for example say that this was wide-spread or that we were aware of it in other cases” he added.
