Greens welcome water charge proposals

The Green Party says the proposals on water charges will benefit everyone if they're introduced.

Debate over the report of the expert group is continuing this morning after it recommended that water should be paid for through general taxation, with charges reserved for wasteful use.

It also suggested that public ownership of water should be more fully addressed by the Special Oireachtas Committee.

Leader of the Green Party Eamon Ryan says the proposals represent real change and are what we need.

Meanwhile the Social Democrats have questioned whether the report's recommendations make sound economic sense.

The water charges commission said that the question of whether to continue metering is one of policy and is outside their remit.
