Gorse fires putting peoples lives at risk.

Tipperary's Chief Fire Officer says fires being started deliberately on mountains across the county are putting people’s lives at risk.

This follows a spate of fires in recent days on the Galtees, Knockmealdown and Keeper Hill.

Fire crews spent almost 12 hours tackling the blaze on the Galtees overnight in a bid to prevent the flames spreading to forested areas on the lower slopes.

They were called out shortly after 8.30 last night to deal with gorse fires on the open mountain at Kilcoran near Cahir.

Over 20 members of the service from Cahir and Cashel tackled the fire – they were eventually stood down shortly after 7 o'clock this morning.

Chief Fire Officer Dave Carroll says the fires are being started deliberately and are putting a major strain on their services.
