Funeral of Tipperary hurling legend to take place today

Thurles and the GAA community from Tipperary and beyond will gather this morning to bid a final farewell to Jimmy Doyle.

It’s likely to be standing room only for many in Bother na Naomh Church this morning as neighbours, friends, sporting colleagues and fans alike gather with Jimmy Doyle's family to say their final farewells to one of sports greatest heroes.

The 76 year old hurling legend passed away suddenly on Monday night, sending shockwaves throughout the GAA community in Tipperary and beyond.

Today's mass at 10 am will be celebrated by Fr Tom Fogerty- who hurled with Jimmy Doyle and is likely to be a celebration of the life of a man who its repeatedly said never sought the limelight and was very modest about his great achievements.

Following today's mass Jimmy will make his final journey around the streets where he grew up with the funeral cortege starting at his father's home before making its way towards the Greyhound Stadium where it will be flanked by members of Thurles Sarsfields and the County Board who will provide a guard of honour as the hurling great travels for one last time down the street named in his honour – The Jimmy Doyle Road.

Once the funeral procession is complete his remains will make its way to the Island Crematorium in Cork.

Traffic is likely to be very heavy in Thurles due to today's funeral and people not attending the mass are being advised of long delays between 11 and 1 pm
