Former Tipperary based Garda seeks compensation for assaults

Joseph Treacy is seeking compensation in relation to three separate assaults.

The High Court heard that Garda Treacy was kicked in the groin in November 2007 while trying to arrest a man who had a stolen car.

He was off work for over a year following the incident and had voluntarily retired from the force two years ago.

Mr Treacy – who was stationed in Cashel – is also seeking compensation in relation to two other assaults.

The High Court heard that on another occasion Garda Treacy's uniform was so covered in blood spat on him by a man he was trying to arrest in Cahir that it had to be burned.

Mr Justice Bernard Barton was also told of injuries suffered in 2004 when he was kicked and punched by another man.

The State alleges Joseph Treacy's injuries had been exacerbated by a pre-existing condition and also claims he had retired on a purely voluntary basis after 30 years in the force.

Judge Barton reserved his decision in the case.
