Former Tipp hurler among soldiers passing out

Several Tipperary sporting stars were among the latest group of recruits that have passed out in the Defence Forces.

A Tipperary senior hurler was among the 140th Recruit Platoon who had their passing out ceremony at Collins Barracks.

25 year old Denis Maher, who has played at Minor and senior hurling level for the Premier County, completed his 17 weeks of army training…he also received the prize for best overall recruit.

Also among the 34 soldiers was Tipperary's Tristan Fogarty who was an All-Ireland finalist with his school’s basketball team while fellow Tipp man, 20 year old John Kerins, has won Irish and Munster medals for handball and Munster medals in boxing.

Tipperary's Darren Cleary, who also passed out, has rugby Munster medals from his club.
