Former Mountjoy Governor says people should be fined rather than jailed

The former Governor of Mountjoy Prison says the justice system should hit people where it hurts – their pockets.

Bansha native John Lonergan says those with money and resources should be penalised financially when they break the law.

He was referring to the 3 year sentence given to a woman yesterday for welfare fraud to the tune of €229,000 – which she had paid back.

John Lonergan says punishing people financially, in some cases, could do some good.
