Five police officers dead in Dallas

Five police officers have been shot dead and six others wounded in Dallas, Texas by snipers who targeted them during rallies to protest against the fatal shooting of two black men by police this week.

Dallas Police Chief David Brown told a news conference that two snipers in elevated positions shot 11 officers, killing three at the scene, in what appeared to be a co-ordinated attack.

Latest reports from local media in Dallas suggest that a suspect in the shooting has been ‘neutralised’.

NBC – DFW say it's brought an end to a shootout which had been taking place with law enforcement in a car park.

Two officers died later from their injuries. Some of the victims were shot in the back.
