Enda Kenny says he’s very much worth his pay of over €3,500 per week.

The Taoiseach was asked about his salary at the launch of the new Low Pay Commission – which will explore how to change the Minimum Wage in the years ahead.

Enda Kenny also said it’s morally unacceptable for people in full-time work to be below the poverty line – and the Government will work to address that.

The Taoiseach was forced to defend his own salary to reporters at the Governments launch of the new Low Pay Commission – the new 8-person advisory committee on the minimum wage.

The Taoiseach says the Commission – which will publish its first report in July – will ensure the current minimum wage of €8.65 per hour is incrementally changed over time.

Business groups including the Irish Small and Medium Enterprises Association say raising it will damage Ireland’s competitiveness.

However Enda Kenny says work must pay more than welfare.
