Effects of Ophelia still being felt in the Premier County

Thousands of homes across Tipperary remain without power this morning as efforts continue to reconnect households cut off in Storm Ophelia.

Areas around the Glen of Aherlow and Cappawhite in West Tipp are among the worst hit while there are still large numbers off the grid in the Borrisoleigh area.

Crews from Scotland, Wales, England and France are joining ESB Networks staff today as efforts continue restore power.

Around 250 staff are being supplied by other networks, as part of a mutual aid agreement.

Some staff from Northern Ireland Electricity are already on the ground.

In all more than 300,000 customers have been reconnected so far, while around 70,000 remain without power across the country

Senan Colleran from ESB Networks says crews have been working night and day.

Meanwhile there are flooding fears for Tipperary and a number of other counties today.

Met Éireann says as much as 50 millimetres of rain can be expected in the south and east.

Heavy rainfall is expected throughout the day with the yellow alert in place until midnight.
