Discussions continuing today on government formation

They're discussing how to proceed with a minority administration, after what was described as a “cordial and constructive” meeting last night.

Groups of Independents are also expected to meet today to decide how they should proceed – but it appears there are splits in their ranks about whether they would support a Fine Gael led or Fianna Fáil led minority government.

Meanwhile, there are reports today that Joan Burton wants to stay on as the Labour Party leader.

The Irish Times claims both Ms Burton and the acting Environment Minister, and Tipperary TD Alan Kelly would seek the post.

It's also suggested they may support each other's nominations, as neither is certain of the backing of other party members.

In order to qualify, leadership candidates must be a sitting TD – they nominate themselves – but they must be seconded by another Deputy.
