Department of Agriculture identifies suspected BSE case in Louth

Tests are still being carried out on a cow which was found dead on a farm – with results to be released in a week.

The Department of Agriculture says it s conducting a full investigation into all matters relating to this suspected case.

It centres on a five-year-old cow found dead on a dairy farm in Co Louth.

The animal wasn’t presented for slaughter and did not enter the food chain.

More tests are now being taken – with the results due to be released in a week’s time.

If it is confirmed as a case of BSE – or Mad Cow Disease – it will be the first in Ireland since 2013.

The Department of Agriculture says it’s informed the European Commission and will liaise with trading partners – amid concern about what this could mean for the recently re-opened beef market in the United States – and talks about exports to other new markets.
