Large Garda presence as Tipp man appears in court on murder charge

There were some further angry scenes today as a Thurles man appeared before the courts in Waterford charged with murdering a young mum in the city.

25 year old Danny Whelan made his third appearance in connection with the charge and was further remanded in custody.

The court was told that a file to the DPP was being sent today.

Two people who were in the body of the court for today’s proceedings at Waterford District Court shouted at Danny Whelan as he was being lead way following the brief hearing.

The 25 year old of no fixed abode but formerly of Thomas Street in Waterford city and originally from Thurles is charged with the murder of Samantha Walsh at an unknown time between April 26th and April 28th- The young mother of four was found dead in her apartment in Thomas Street in Waterford.

During the Thurles man’s last appearance in court on the murder charge, in early May, proceedings had to be halted for several minutes after a number of people shouted obscenities and tried to get near him. This time there was a strong garda presence to prevent a repeat of that along with several vans from the garda public order unit.

Today Inspector Anthony Dineen told the court that the gardaí are sending a file on the DPP this very day and sought and was granted a further remand – The 25 year old will appear again in court on July 4th.
