Councillors vote against property tax increase

There will be no increase in the Local Property Tax in Tipperary next year.

Councillors voted against proposals for a 10% increase in the levy put forward by CEO Joe MacGrath.

The increase would have resulted in an additional €1.1 million for the local authority in 2017 – two thirds of this would have been spent on roads with the remainder split between the five Municipal Districts.

The increase in the tax would have meant a 17 cent per week rise for householders on the lowest valuation band.

However Cathaoirleach Siobhán Ambrose said councillors felt now was not the time to impose any increase on struggling homeowners.
