Councillors in North Tipperary will vote in a new Cathaoirleach today.

Meanwhile a successor to Michael Fitzgerald as chair of the county council will be decided on Monday

Over the next week and a half 40 councillors will vote in four new Cathaoirleach’s for Carrick on Suir, Cashel Tipp Town, Thurles Templemore and Nenagh – as well as a new Mayor in Clonmel to replace Martin Lonergan.

There were fireworks in several of the districts last year with Sinn Fein and some independent representatives frustrated at the selection process and calling for the dHondt system to be introduced- something that is likely to be raised again over the coming days – while in Thurles Templemore FF Michael Smith lost the party whip after he went against an agreed pact with Fine Gael

Nenagh is first up today where a successor to Fiona Bonfield will be elected at their AGM at 10 before the District's regular June meeting gets underway.

Next Wednesday Clonmel Borough – which has already held its June meeting, will elect a new mayor while on the same day Thurles Templemore will also select a replacement for Councillor Smith.

Independent Councillor Eddie O'Meara will step down next Friday when Carrick holds its AGM while its the turn of Cashel Tipperary the following Monday where a successor to John Crosse will be elected.

Meanwhile an overall Cathaoirleach and leas Cathaoirleach for Tipperary County Council will be chosen when elected representatives gather at the civic offices in Nenagh next Monday.
