Cold snap adds to overcrowding problems

North Tipperary patients are being warned of severe overcrowding at University Hospital Limerick today.

New figures show it has the highest number of people being treated on trolleys across the country.

Meanwhile the situation has eased slightly in South Tipp General but there is still significant overcrowding at the Clonmel health facility.

Daily figures from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation show there are 36 patients stuck on trolleys or overflow ward areas at Dooradoyle in Limerick today – making it the most overcrowded hospital in the country.

This is followed closely by Cork at 31 and Galway at 28.

The situation isn't much better at South Tipperary General Hospital with the numbers needing a bed on a ward still in double digits – 16 patients are still being treated on trolleys either in the ED or along the corridors with a further nine in overflow areas of the wards.

And with the weekend looming and the ongoing cold snap those figures aren't likely to improve over the coming days.
