Clonmel residents put on possible evacuation alert

Council officials at the Borough District have taken the action after river levels rose considerably over the past number of days reaching a peak level of 4.0m yesterday morning.

In a statement to Tipp Fm the council says this level exceeded all reliable OPW flood data for the past 25 years.

A spokesperson went on to state that while “levels are now receding, there is concern over predicted rainfall over the coming days which may cause another rise in river levels necessitating the evacuation of persons from certain areas”.

The council has issued the “precautionary notification” is being issued this evening in accordance with the Clonmel Flood Response Plan. 

The local authority is also asking people to tune into Tipp FM or log onto www.tipperarycoco.ie for further updates over the coming days and stress that at this point it's only a precautionary notice
