Carrick on Suir Library is set to close this month due to serious structural problems.

However its a temporary measure with major repair works due to be carried out on the building over the summer.

A mobile service will be put in place in the interim.

Addressing members of Carrick on Suir Municipal District – County Librarian Damien Dullaghan informed them that the building in Carrick on Suir needed repair work immediately.

Mr Dullaghan said they brought in a structural engineer who found that the the only viable option was to replace the roof so they secured grant aid from the Environment Department, put the project out to tender and have now secured the services of a building contractor.

However he says the works will mean the library’s closure for most of the summer.

The plan was broadly welcomed by Carrick councillors who questioned whether or not public internet access would be available in the mobile library.

Damien Dullaghan said while that wasn’t possible, the temporary facility will have all other services, staff would be unaffected but the opening hours may change slightly.
