Call to tackle sale of scrap metal

The Justice Minister is being urged to introduce laws to prevent the selling of scrap metals following a spate of robberies in Tipperary.

It follows the latest theft of between €3,000 and €5,000 worth of live ESB cable wire from the Ballycarron area of Golden over the Easter weekend.

There have been a number of similar incidents across the county in recent years.

There’s a large market for metals which are melted down and in particular for copper.

Tipperary Independent TD Mattie McGrath, who has brought forward bills on the issue, is calling for the Government to introduce legislation to regulate the sale of scrap and precious metals.
