Call for former J&J workers to be recruited by Amneal in Cashel

The confirmation of Amneal's arrival in Cashel follows 18 months of negotiations involving the IDA and local Oireachtas members.

The decision of the Pharma giant to choose the town as their first European venture is being seen as a huge vote of confidence in Cashel and Tipperary as a county.

The local community was left reeling when Johnson & Johnson closed up its operations on the Cahir Road in 2011 with the loss of over 200 full and part time workers.

These jobs will now finally be replaced with Amneal planning between 250 and 300 jobs in R&D and the production of inhalers and biosimilars in Cashel.

Anne-Marie Tierney-Le Roux is the IDA's Head of Regional Business Development in the south east – she says the positions on offer at Amneal will be well paid.

From its foundation in 2002 as a contract drug manufacturer Amneal – which is based in New Jersey – has grown to its current position as the 7th largest U.S generics supplier by volume.

The IDA played a key role in the company's decision to locate their first European base in Cashel.

The authority has come in for much criticism in recent years for the lack of job creation in County Tipperary – Jobs Minister Richard Bruton admits that has been an issue but says things are changing.

There's been a broad welcome from Oireachtas members in the county along with members of the local Municipal District to the jobs announcement.

A management structure will initially be put in place following which the recruitment process will take place over the next two years. Retrofitting of the 200,000 square foot factory will also have to be carried out.

With Tipperary and the south east in general home to a large number of pharmaceutical companies the quality of the available workforce is seen as being of top quality.

Cashel Chamber President Aidan Hynes says he will be pressing Amneal to employ former Johnson & Johnson staff.
