Anger in Tipp town over loss of company

Tipperary's local authority has been accused of being unwilling to change zoning in order to attract new business.

Tipperary Distribution Ltd, which is based in Tipp town say they've been forced to relocated to Cahir as they couldn't find an alternative location in the area.

The company had looked for a premises on the Limerick Road to be rezoned from retail to commercial but was refused.

The news that Tipperary Distribution Ltd is moving locations has been met with dismay and anger in the west Tipp town.

The company's 26 employees were informed that the building they're currently housed in has been sold…efforts to secure another location in Tipp Town have failed and the entire operation is set to move to Cahir.

They had hoped to move to another premises on the Limerick Road but ran into planning difficulties as the site was zoned retail, not commercial…the council were asked to rezone but refused.

John O'Connor from the Tipp Town action group says the area is not being given the chance to improve.

There has been severe criticism of the Council and the IDA for failing to bring new employment to the town….Director of Tipperary Distribution Ltd Michael Twomey says their move away will affect families as not all workers can come to Cahir.

The company's operations will move in the next three weeks….John O'Connor says the site that Tipperary Distribution wanted to relocate to, is still sitting there idle.
