2 Tipp towns gear up for early Patrick’s Day parades

Parades are taking place in both Thurles and Borrisokane today and gardai are advising patrons that there will be a series of road traffic restrictions to facilitate the festivities.

Thurles is first of the blocks this weekend with their parade due to kick off in the town centre at 2.45. It will head off from Lidl on Abbey road, and enter Liberty Square from Friar Street with dozens of floats and bands due to participate.

Garda say that traffic restrictions will be in place for the duration- with road closures from 2.30 until 5 with junctions manned by officers and Stewards.

People are being asked to stay behind the barriers and cordon tape while Parents are advised to keep small children safe and away from moving vehicles

Meanwhile events in Borrisokane won’t get underway until 4 pm – following a ten k road race and 5 k walk.

The N52 main street and the N65 from Towerhill Borrisokane will be closed to traffic from 3.55 until 4.55 approximately and for the duration of the Patricks Day Parade drivers in the area are being advised to reduce their speed.

Meanwhile there are a number of restrictions in place for the race and walk in Borrisokane.

This race will commence on Main Street Borrisokane (N.52) at 12, proceed North onto the N.65 Borrisokane / Portumna Road to Ballyspillane Cross.

Traffic travelling North Bound will be restricted until the athletes leave the N.65. This will last approx 30 mins.

The North Bound carriageway on Main Street Borrisokane (N.52) will be closed off from 12midday until 1.30pm.

Gardai will be on point duty to regulate traffic at Main Street during this time.

The walk will then start immediately after the athletes have departed and travel out the Ballinderry Road from Main Street to Trombicane Cross and return by the same route.

As this is a local minor road, motorists from Ballinderry, Terryglass, Kilbarron etc are asked to drive with extreme caution as a large number of walkers are expected.
