19 killed in Japan stabbings

A man with mental health problems is being blamed for Japan's worst mass killing since the Second World War.

He's admitted to stabbing at least 19 people to death at a care home in a city west of Tokyo.

The suspect, who used to work at the centre, was arrested after handing himself in – reportedly telling police he wanted to “get rid of the disabled from the world”.

20 people are seriously injured after the attack west of Tokyo.

David McNeill is the Irish Times Correspondent in Tokyo, he says the suspect had been suffering from mental health issues.
