The NPPR tax was abolished last year, but there are several thousand people who never paid the €200 a year charge – the deadline for backpaying the charge is the end of this month.
However, with penalties for non-payment included, the total cost stands at over €4,000 – and if not paid by the 31st August, this will rise to €7,230.
Tipperary Independent TD Michael Lowry says that the late fees are outrageous and the deadline needs to be extended to give people more time to clear the debt.
