A new documentary is being aired on Tipp Fm this evening which tells the story of the American Civil War's first casualty
It reveals Tipperary man Private Daniel Hough was first to die in the bloody war.
Investigated by Tipp Today producer Tom Hurley in both Ireland and the US it features interviews with contributors from both countries.
Hurley's research shows Hough enlisted in the US Army after emigrating in 1849.
He was posted at Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbour, South Carolina in April 1861 when the war broke out.
Although he survived during fighting unsuccessfully to defend the fort from Confederate attack he was killed by accident soon afterwards in a surrender ceremony.
The programme which is being aired at six o'clock on Tipp fm this evening was funded by the Broadcasting Association of Ireland.
