‘Suspicious’ package sent to Minister Kelly’s office declared safe

A suspicious package containing white powder along with a threatening note was sent to his Nenagh office this morning.

The army have since declared it a hoax.

Minister Kelly has described the incident as ‘deeply disturbing’.

At 9.05 this morning a female member of Alan Kelly's staff at the Summerhill Office in Nenagh was opening post when a white powdered substance spilled out onto her hands from one of the letters which also contained a threatening note.

Gardaí were immediately alerted and the Army Bomb Disposal Unit called to the scene.

The building was then sealed off with the 3 staff members inside for several hours until the army was able to determine that the substance wasn't of a dangerous chemical or explosive nature.

Speaking to Tipp Fm the Environment Minister who wasn't in the office at the time described the incident as deeply disturbing and said that his staff were left deeply shaken.

He added that the note in the letter also threatened him, his family and his staff and warned him to “watch himself at home, in the car and at his office”

It's not the first time the Portroe native has been targeted since being appointed as Environment Minister.

Last November a caller to the Summerhill office threatened to kill both the minister and his staff while there was also a bomb threat made – Then earlier this year Minister Kelly said Gardaí informed him that dissident republicans had made death threats against his family.
