Lowry sent forward for trial

Tipperary Independent TD Michael Lowry is to stand trial on allegations he knowingly filed incorrect tax returns.

The Book of Evidence in the case was served on the Former Fine Gael Minister today after he was ordered to appear before Thurles District Court.

He is charged with three counts of knowingly filing incorrect tax returns on October 31st, 2003 and another count of knowingly filing an incorrect return on August 3rd, 2007.

Michael Lowry of Glenreigh, Holycross arrived at the courthouse in Thurles at around 2.15 this afternoon and spoke with his solicitor while waiting for proceedings to resume.

The case had been mentioned before 1 o’clock but adjourned after Judge Elizabeth MacGrath said she wanted the Book of Evidence to be “served personally on the accused”.

The Independent deputy was not called on to speak during the five minute hearing but nodded in acknowledgement when advised by Judge MacGrath that he had 14 days to furnish details of any alibi evidence he intended to rely on during his trial to the prosecution.

He was then formally sent forward for trial at the next session of Nenagh Circuit Court beginning on June 24th on his own bail bond of 500 euro.
