A number of seriously ill people have been admitted recently with many of them still in the Emergency Department awaiting a bed.

48 patients are without a bed at University Hospital Limerick today making it the most overcrowded in the country.

Management at the Dooradoyle health facility are asking people to think about all their care and treatment options and keep Emergency Department services for patients who need them most.

Many people with limb injuries can go to Injury Units in Nenagh, Ennis or St John’s Hospital.

The unit in Nenagh Hospital is open from 8am to 8pm each day.

Others with a less serious illness can be treated by their GP or out of hours GP service where they can be referred to an Assessment Unit the following day if required.

However, if you are seriously injured or ill or are worried your life is at risk the ED will assess and treat you as a priority.

In all there are 423 patients being treated on trolleys at hospitals across the country today – 17 of these are at South Tipp General in Clonmel.
