Government to investigate undergrounding of Eirgrid project

The Government is to investigate whether undergrounding is a possibility for the Gridlink Project…

There's growing opposition to the 500 million euro plans for a series of 45 metre high pylons stretching from Kildare to Cork – with two of the proposed routes running through South Tipp at Cahir, Clerihan and Carrick.

At today's cabinet meeting, it was agreed that Communications Minister Pat Rabbitte would establish an independent commission to examine the underground options for the Gridlink and Gridwest projects.

Campaigners have been calling for the transmission network to put underground along the routes; however, Eirgrid says it's not a feasible option.

The commission will feature a panel of experts and be chaired by an independent judge.

It comes after EirGrid received 35,000 submissions to its public consultation the GridLink scheme
