Works programme agreed for 2 Tipp Districts

Both Districts have just agreed their respective Works Programmes for 2015; however the North Tipp proposals nearly didn't make it over the line due to serious objections of the removal of one particular route.

Over €7.3 million is set to be spent on road projects, improvements, maintenance and footpath upgrades across the Nenagh Municipal District over the coming months.

The works include the completion of restoration improvements to the R491 Rathurles to Kilruane, as well as the R 438 at Graigue and Annagh.

Almost 318 thousand will be spent on street cleaning and over 400 thousand on local amenities.

However plans to adopt the programme were nearly scuppered after Fianna Fail's John Carroll objected to the removal of an agreed road for upgrade works. despite being assured the money would be found later in the year.

In the end – Municipal Cathaoirleach- Labour's Fiona Bonfield offered to give up a road in her area – stating she was confident extra monies could be found for it later and the programme was passed.

Speaking afterwards Clr Carroll was defiant in his decision to stand firm insisting they had made a commitment to work on a number of routes when the plan was drafted up 3 years ago and was not going back on his word.

In Clonmel a programme of over €6.7 million was adopted by councillors there

They include works on the R688 between Clerihan Village and Darcy's Cross. This stretch of road has been the scene of a number of crashes in recent years with many calls for resurfacing works there in a bid to improve safety.

Restoration improvements will also be carried out on the Mitchelstown Road in Cahir to the old N8 and on Church Street.

While the programme also allow for over €340 thousand to be spent on street cleaning and half a million on maintaining parks and open spaces.
