South Tipp General has received a prestigious Baby Friendly Hospital status award.

This award, which is part of the global programme of the World Health Organisation and the United Nations Children’s Fund, is given to maternity units that promote best practise in breastfeeding.

South Tipperary General Hospital has now joined the ranks of several other Irish facilities in being granted the status – the first Irish hospitals to reach Baby Friendly standard were Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe and Waterford Regional Hospital.

Dr Genevieve Becker, National Co-ordinator for the Baby Friendly Health Initiative presented the award to South Tipp General.

The initiative works with public services to protect, promote and support breastfeeding and to strengthen mother-baby and family relationships.

Local Independent TD Mattie McGrath has congratulated the hospital on the award saying “it is a clear indication of the esteem which the maternity unit at the hospital is held both locally and nationally.”
