Grave concern over lack of social housing building plans

Housing officials told meetings of both Nenagh and Clonmel Districts this month that the council is still waiting to find out its grant allocation so has been unable to complete it housing programme for 2015.

At present there are over 1,200 people on waiting lists between the Nenagh Municipal District and the Clonmel – Cahir Borough District.

However with council official Aiden Fennessy telling both councils that it is highly unlikely that there will be even one new social house built in the county in 2015 the situation doesn't look like improving.

According to Clonmel based independent councillor Richie Molloy the maximum rent subsidy in Clonmel for a 3 bedroom house is €500.

However the minimum rent is around €600 leaving a significant shortfall – he claims some people have been forced to turn to money lenders to make up the difference.

Councillor Molloy says building local authority houses would have a number of other benefits as well as providing homes for people in the county.

Councillor Michael O'Meara says the situation is getting critical and is impacting on young families in particular.

The Rathcabbin-based Independent says it's time for Local Government Minister Alan Kelly to follow up on promises he has made.

Workers and Unemployed Action Group member Pat English pointed out that with house repossessions set to increase in Tipperary and across the country, the demand for local authority housing is going to get much worse.
