Decision due soon on plans for landmark Nenagh site

An application was lodged with Tipperary County Council in 2015 for works at a former shopping centre in the town.

O'Connor's Shopping Centre in Nenagh – or Joeys as it was known to most people – closed in 2011 with the loss of 70 jobs.

Having lain idle for a number of years the five acre site on Martyr's Road was eventually purchased by businessman Martin Healy early in 2015.

At the time the Two-Mile-Borris native unveiled multi-million Euro plans to redevelop it to include new retail outlets and a primary care centre creating in the region of 200 jobs.

An application to demolish the existing buildings and prepare the site for that development was submitted at the end of November 2015.

In January of last year a 12 month extension of time was granted on the planning application – a ruling is now due from Tipperary County Council by next Wednesday.

Martin Healy also purchased the Munster Hotel in Thurles in 2014 – that is being turned into a health care facility.
