Thurles claim third county title in a row

Thurles Sarsfields are the county senior hurling champions for a third successive year.

They lifted the Dan Breen Cup again after beating Kiladangan 0-27 to 1-15 in the final at Semple Stadium.

Man of the Match Ronan Maher of Sars says the club's latest triumph didn't come out of the blue.

But the day was bittersweet for the Mid Tipp club as Sarsfields lost one of their greatest ever players hours before the big match began.

Mickey 'The Rattler' Byrne – who was club President at the time of his death aged 93 – won five All-Ireland senior medals for Tipperary.

He also played in 14 county final winning sides for Sarsfields.

Club coach Paddy McCormack says he was an inspiration.

Meanwhile, St Mary's Clonmel retained the county minor A hurling title in Thurles yesterday.

The South Tipp club defeated JK Brackens Óg 2-15 to 2-11 in the competition decider.

And Burgess-Duharra have made if five county senior camogie titles in a row.

They achieved the impressive feat by defeating Borrisoleigh 2-13 to 1-9 in the final replay at The Ragg.
