Barnes reacts to early Olympics exit

The captain of the Irish boxing squad suffered a split decision loss yesterday in his opening bout in Rio, which means that he will be a spectator for the rest of the games.

The two-time bronze medal winner revealed afterwards that he had struggled to get under the 49kg weight limit for the past two years.

Former team captain Ken Egan says that Barnes had no choice but to try and compete at light-flyweight.

Meanwhile, David Oliver Joyce will be the only Irish boxer in action today.

After his impressive preliminary round victory, Joyce returns to the ring later tonight to fight of Albert Selimov of Azerbaijan in the last-16 of the Lightweight division.
