It’s understood an NGO group including one man with strong Tipperary links are being detained by authorities in Turkey.

Details are sketchy but it’s understood up to 15 people, most of them Irish passport holders, were working with the International Medical Corps.

The group were believed to have been detained by Turkish officials in recent days and are currently being held in a deportation centre in Gaziantep, which is around 30 miles from the Syrian border.

Members of the group were in contact with family members up until last Friday evening but there has been no contact since.

One of them is a 29 year old man from Cork with family links to Portroe in North Tipp.

Several local representatives including Alan Kelly, Mattie McGrath and Fiona Bonfield have been making representations on his behalf.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has told Tipp FM they are aware of the case and are providing consular assistance.
